During the summer most South Africans do a braai (pronounced 'bry-i'), which is the equivalent of a barbecue. A great deal of red meat, potato salad and green salads. Beer, wine and champagne are a staple for New Year's Eve. I think most people do far more drinking than eating.
Personally, I enjoy light snacks and stay far away from excessive red meat.

I didn't know you call a BBQ a braai. That's from the Dutch word "braden" (but people often say braaien) which is frying meat.
