In 2022, Zelensky proposed a peace plan, a series of peace plans and was encouraged by the West to keep fighting for its sovereignty that if he wanted to go on fighting Russia, he will have their support. As long as the gravy train was running (America), Europe would be fighting an endless war with Russia. Granted Russia miscalculated the length of the invasion but at the end of the day, Ukraine was used by the West against Russia and all it got out of it is a worn torn country.
Yes, the West is supporting Ukraine, but for more than just weakening Russia. It's supporting a democracy in a region where there are too many authoritarians and socialist states. Supporting Ukraine leads China to believe that the West could support Taiwan in a military conflict. Also the West gets valuable military intelligence on weapons development and Russia (and China)'s military capabilities. We see how good Iran's drones and North Korea's artillery are, too. We assess their communications and tactics. In short, they're awful, and we can see that.
But this is not simply a proxy war, and we'd all like to see it ended soon, but good luck getting Putin to stop with anything less than all that he has taken so far, and not have to pay any reparations.
