The (new?) rule of dealing with photos is odd.
I had a photo removed a few days back.
I got a mail saying I had to use photos that clearly showed my face and nothing else and a smile.
Now my photo did clearly show my face and I did smile. You could also see a bit of my Christmas tree in the background.
But my entire face was in clear view in the foreground.
Looking at other people's photos, newer accounts so from after the change here, there is one on a motorbike in the distance that doesn't show a face at all. Too far away and wearing a helmet.
Another one with a giraffe almost covering his face.
Full body photos that don't even show a head in the thumbnail.
Photos with sunglasses and/or hats & caps.
And so on.
That is okay & allowed, yet one with your face AND smile in plain view with a bit of a Christmas tree in the back gets removed?
Doesn't make sense to me.
If you cannot have anything in the background they'd have to remove tons of photos, including yours.
It's just silly.
Thank you for this lengthy answer, this is exactly what I meant, and tried to explain to no avail. I'm afraid that TxsGal3333 still refers to a way this site functioned and is no longer current.
My experience is exactly similar. And if I meant that I didn't like this picture, that is not only because it was my last option, but I had to reframe it twice before it was accepted - no background accepted, even my hair is gone, only a close up from my face is valid. I have three other photos, but if I switch them to be my main picture, they are rapidly rejected and deleted with the very same message as yours.
I agree that older accounts sometimes showed anything. But I certainly like to see a little more from a person, and the background is also meaningful. So a close up from a face is a nonsense in my opinion.
