I prefer my phone because you can get free updates. some devices require you to pay money to get updates and thats just nuts when there are plenty of free ones on the phone.
You can even download maps for google maps now.

I recommend Rand McNally.

Once you learn how to read a map,
you won't need to waste money or
bandwidth on a silly GPS format.

Garmin or Tom Tom. Make sure to update the GPS every once and again by plugging it into your computer.

Google. Free, always updated and up to speed with traffic jams. Works a treat.

Always knowing which way is north and my trusty atlas. Some of us dinosaurs have gotten around pretty well for a long time with this system.

I use Garmins and they are reliable; Magellan is also very good.

I have a Garmin so old it's not listed even in archival info, and it still works fine; but not as good as the modern ones though.

Get a GPS that picks up more than one network of positional satellites.
Possibly one that takes memory chips loaded with maps, and waterproof if hand held.

Yeah, just a bit difficult to use when in the middle of a city and you're lost. Also doesn't guide you around one-way streets.
It's not allowed to use whilst driving, bloody dangerous. You'd have to stop which isn't always possible, and incredibly annoying.
And if you're doubting about an exit you cannot check a map whereas with a navigator there is no doubt as it simply tells you.
Not to mention you'd have to buy a new map every year with the amount of new roads made.
The dinosaur day was easier in that sense. Roads weren't that busy, maybe a quarter of today's number of cars, if that, and not so many roads and motorways either.
Dinosaurs went extinct for a reason...
