What criteria are Oscar nominations based upon? It is challenging to make a case against racial favoritism at the Oscars for 2 reasons.

1. What is the criteria used to guage if ANY movie is eligible for nominations irregardless of which race produced the work. Wouldn't that be the only reference ANY race can use to determine if they have been cheated out of a nomination or not?

2. How can we know if minority movies are being rejected any more than OTHER white movies are being rejected if we dont know how many white movies were ALSO rejected alongside the rejected black movies ?

Until clear answers are provided for the 2 issues raised above, I dont know what evidence the black community has to stand on. Maybe you can clarify that for me Ms Harmony as I admit to being ignorant about the internal workings of the Oscars.

As for some of the other comments that were made, I am SICK TO DEATH of people conveniently citing any specific incident in an attempt to nullify truth that is inconvenient to them.

While I don't have enough evidence to support the black boycott of the oscars , I am disappointed in people who use this isolated incident to nullify the blatant truth that racism exists today. Citing cases that don't fall under the umbrella of racism does NOT eradicate the truth of racism's existence in the world. Similarly, I am just as disappointed in minorities who use the reality of racism as an excuse to receive or condone special favours . And that is ONE reason why this issue of racism still thrives today. The minorities and whites keep passing the buck and both REFUSE to accept accountability for wrong actions committed by the group they belong to.

I appreciate that analogy so lets apply it to the issue at hand. How many many minority movies were created this year vs the number of white movies created. Was it a 50/50 ratio like the scenario you just described?

Given the liberal bent of Hollywood I would think most there would be perfectly happy with the easiest solution. Every year, once the winners are determined, then award some additional 5-10 "diversity" oscars to ensure that the proportion of oscars awarded to each racial group matches the makeup in the US. So, for example, let's say you need 1.5 African Americans to even up the stats - you give Will Smith and Halle Berry diversity oscars

They still get to put "Academy award winning actor" before or after their name in the future. And who ever remembers exactly which movie somebody won for anyway?

People have a right to act in accordance with their convictions once transacted legally, but I dont believe that the ends always justifies the means. Why didnt Jada and Spike lee stage a boycott on the basis of demanding a standardised and transparent criteria for nominations? Isn't it more compelling to endorse the principle of fairness for ALL groups of people as opposed to minorities only? If the academy adopts an affirmative action approach in reaction to a boycott based on unsubstantiated claims of race exclusion , then dont minorities run the risk of acquiring future nominations on the basis of pity rather than talent?. Did Martin Luther king and Malcolm X engage in this perilous freedom fight for minorities to be patronised ? ... or for them to be empowered through equal channels of meritocracy?

That's probably because there haven't been any Oscar worthy performances.

I do believe that claims of racism without adequate substantiation is an act of recklessness.
