I think the price of more freedom is more risks and more violence, and the price for more safety is less freedoms.

that being said, it is tragic anyone should lose their life. I am pro life all the way around and pro youth.

There definitely needs to be focus on preventative measures so that there is not such urgency in creating punitive measures. And Chicago isn't even the most violent city in America or even as violent as it was in previous decades. But there is a correlation between levels of concentrated poverty and levels of concentrated crime. there is also a correlation between community relationship between police and citizens and the violence rates.

Uplifting the communities will take cooperation from citizens and police and city and state governments. There need to be options presented from an early age to reinforce self respect and self value from a young age, there also needs to be resources and community/parental cooperation that help these young people get exposure to different interests and possibilities than the concentrated poverty they are immersed in every day.

The immediate band aid will be to focus on gangs, but without uplifting the community, it will only be a band aid on a broken bone. there needs to be real attention to improvement that is long term.





maybe Obama can donate some of his millions from his "book" deal and help out his home city...

they are already donating millions to chicago jobs programs .. so yeah. Hopefully others who are able can follow suit.

That is terrible.. absolutely terrible. It amazes me that people show pity towards these cowardly thugs who shoot into crowds as evident at the block party and funeral and also by police accounts.

Good work Mom and baby daddy... your kids grew up to be something in the thug world... real good job you did there.

I was watching an interview where the police officer was saying residents hold him more responsible than the actual shooters. I think that is true. People know these shooters and protect them. They only get mad if it's them or their family shot. It's an uncivilized society.

I know .. no one saw " nuttin"..then blame th cops for not protecting them.

the cops here set up anonymous hotlines and if lead turns into a arrest then the person get $3,000. that actually does work and the cops have a very good record of keeping the caller anonymous

some people don't anything until some money is slapped down in front of them.. then they " remember"

I still blame the parent and that sperm donor they know damn well their kid is leaving the house with a stolen gun under his shirt.. and no good can ever come from that.

That would be a start, the violence by gun problem in Chicago has been rising every year.. astronomical numbers.
Some here say the way to fix it is with educating the young.. by changing the parenting skills. and by mentoring.. all well and good.. all positive steps that we all will " hopefully" see the benefits of in about

2-3 generations from now

What about now, they have no answer to that.. none. that's why I think the national guard along with state and Chicago cops need to clean out these thugs who are holding the residents in fear of their lives once and for all.. now... not 15 -20 years from now.

You see national guard troops at O'Hare airport and Mid Way airport to protect against terrorist trying to kill people...so what is the difference between the terrorists and the thugs trying to kill people.

Chicago City police are in charge of keeping control in Chicago.

Unfortunately, people who are non violent live in. Crime areas. Many cannot afford to move.

I spent many weekends in Chicago in the mid 90's. ! It wasn't. Nearly as bad.

However, my friend lived downtown in a secure Apt building . You had to check in at the front desk before entering the main door. Expensive Apt. Bldg.

My friend moved to California yrs ago. Now it's battling, Smoke from nearby. Areas. on :fire: fire.

The only issue I see with the proposals is that Chicago is singled out. though in raw numbers the violence is high, it is not close to the highest when accounting for the population in Chicago.

there are many cities with even more 'epidemic' rates per capita of violent crime. And if we put national guard in all those cities, its a pandora's box that could lead to an enforcement trend nationwide, which I would not want to see.


I think there have been other times that violence has spiked and somehow came back down and other places where violence has been curbed by measures beyond military efforts. Perhaps we can take some cues from what has already worked before to bring the numbers down, before resorting to military state, or cities.

The residents in those areas seem to be against the police. They may have decided to just let them shoot it out and thin the herd. :thinking:

It is a problem both when citizens are against police AND when police are against citizens. there is something to the RELATIONSHIP built between the two that would not hurt to be improved upon.

The police are there to catch the criminals. It's a dangerous job. The criminals of course don't like the police. Family doesn't like when other family and friends are arrested. I can see why the police would just sit it out.

That no doubt is sometimes true. And also true is that being a young person in those areas is a dangerous 'job'. The young people assumed to not have value or to be guilty until proven innocent and treated merely like 'thugs' instead of citizens with due rights, of course, dont like it. Some police dont like when their authority or motives are questioned by such citizens. People dont like when their kids are treated less than human. I can see why citizens wouldnt want to bother cooperating with them.


IT does go both ways, just like any 'relationship', which is why work is needed from both sides.

Residence make it harder for police to do their jobs by protecting criminals. A good reason for cops to stay out of it and let the residents kill each other. You won't see them protesting black on black killings. Then police go home to their families after their shift.

you cant prove innocence without an investigation. thats why you are supposed to be innocent UNTIL proven, merely being stopped does not prove one is guilty of anything.

Protest is a way to change a system, it makes no sense that people would 'protest' the criminals, as the justice system deals with criminals. Protesting civil servants or businesses, et cetera brings about potential change in the way those people are hired and/or paid.

Keeping your nose clean is great, but doesnt excuse the undue consequences of merely being suspected which can end up being excessive force or records.


any relationship is a two way street, and both ways have to earn and maintain trust and respect with the other.

Residents could make a big difference in the problem. They could set up a charity for donation to offer rewards. Some people would turn in their own mom for some money.
