What makes an artist the best? Selling albums. Afterall that's the job of an artist to sell albums. I figure Jay Z is the best artist that ever lived, having sold the most number one albums. What do you think

I think definitely not him.
Being a great or "best" artist cannot be determined by sales in my opinion.

I don't think anyone can say who is the best recording artist, past or present. I think longevity has something to do with, taking into account the person didn't die young. Who knows what John Lennon would be doing now if he hadn't been killed? Look at how successful Elton John has been and for how many years? He's not a favorite of mine, but I'm using him as an example.

Some of them were the best of there era..
Kurt Cobain , John lennon , Jimmy hendrix, Elvis presley, Tupac, Notorious B.i.g, Bob marley, Jim Morrison, Ronnie van zant, Aaliyah..
The list goes on and on but these were some of my favorites
