But it does help if the OP gives a link and a bit more about the story.. in order to form an opinion.
Moderator,
Isn't the businessinsider news article you gave a link to, sufficient for you to say whether you agree with the web designer's argument or not?
First of all I'm not a Mod which I have explained to you more then once..
And I never said it was not enough for me to determine an opinion. Since I'm the one that posted the link. In order for others to figure out what you were even talking about. It is in the Rules that the OP should provide links (proof) of what their thread pertains too.
I said it explains why I can see there is a possibility that the couple in fact even went to her for their design cause they knew she would refuse them just so they could sue her..
And I very clearly posted that~~so not sure what your question is here!
It would be more on Religious discrimination actually all based on the Web Designers Religion.. Which in fact is an argument that the Web Designer can use. Due to the fact she even posted on her Website
""Smith highlights her faith on her website and emphasizes that she avoids communicating messages that are "inconsistent with her religious beliefs."""
Everyone has the right to their beliefs within their religion, that is guaranteed by the First Amendment.
As I said why would a gay couple go to her, knowing that within her Religion she does not acknowledge same sex marriages??
That all may be, first amendment, her stating that on her website etc. etc., but her belief isn't under threat. She can believe what she wants, doesn't mean she can reject people based on their sexual orientation. The same-sex couple is being discriminated, not her religion & beliefs.
Would be quite something is you could use your beliefs as a reason to not serve people. Again, if she gets away with this you can soon have scenarios where doctors refuse to help people because of their sexual orientation, skin colour, ethnicity etc. etc.
What if you happen to be gay/coloured/of other religion and desperately need surgery yet the doctor refuses based on those facts? Insanity!!
Or you get kicked out of the supermarket, or cannot buy a coffee at Starbucks, because you're skin isn't white and the shop assistant's beliefs entitle her/him to stick to that point?
She can practise her belief all she wants, that's not under scrutiny. But it should never be allowed to become a gauge of whom you serve and who not when it concerns sexual orientation, skin colour, (other) religion etc.
How far does she go? What if a Muslim couple wants her to make a website? Or a black couple? Or when she feels a couple shouldn't get married because they're not a good match? As that would also be an option then. It's her playing god.
Seriously crossing a line.
If this couple deliberately did this is another issue. And to be honest, not even wrong. It'd be good to have a clear court ruling for others to rely on when a similar thing happens elsewhere.
As for myself, I'd also not go to someone like that if I really wanted my wedding stuff done. But that's only because I can't be bothered with the hassle. It would P me O though as it simply is NOT right. And if it P me O enough I'd sure as heck do the same thing: sue her!
At some point someone has got to make a statement to stop religious nutters. Simply put: if such things are so problematic for her she shouldn't run a business.
